Basic Medieval Math Education
This talk will explore popular numeracy in England during the Middle Ages. How did medieval peasants and merchants learn to perform basic arithmetic? How were popular religious practices shaped around number? During the talk we'll consider a variety of medieval sources, including eighth-century finger counting techniques, early ninth-century story problems, and a fifteenth-century mathematical poem in Middle English.
